Catcher in the Rye Plot Essay Example for Free

Catcher in the Rye Plot Essay At the point when somebody is youthful, they will in general have honesty about them. As youngsters grow up, they no longer have this normal honesty. Introduction to the entirety of the scorn on the planet causes this misfortune. Holden Caulfield understands this basic reality, as he himself grows up, and makes some troublesome memories with the change. He encounters issues with correspondence just as his school work. A typical topic utilized all through The Catcher in the Rye has to do with inconsistencies Holden makes. In J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, first individual perspective is utilized to feature logical inconsistencies Holden makes all through the novel. Holden’s first logical inconsistency turns out to be clear in the initial hardly any parts of the book. With regards to going to motion pictures, he asserts that he loathes the organization of Robert Ackley or heading out to see motion pictures. However, he goes to a show with Ackley. On Friday night, while Stradlater was out on the town with Jane, Holden made his own arrangements. Holden, Mal Brossard, and Ackley went out for a burger and a film. â€Å"†¦ chose we’d bring a transport into Agerstown and have a cheeseburger and possibly observe a lousy movie.†(36) Due to the utilization of first individual perspective, we discover Holden’s internal contemplations rather than simply depending on his activities. Additionally, later on in the novel, Holden goes out to see one more film, in spite of his case of detesting them. While in the theater, he turns out to be very irritated with the lady sitting close to him. She cried all through the whole film ov er, in Holden’s words, fake stuff. â€Å"†¦ there was a woman sitting close to me that cried all through the goddam picture. The phonier it got, the more she cried.†(139) We find out about Holden’s inward considerations in view of first individual perspective. We can discover another logical inconsistency managing Holden’s scorn of motion pictures. At the point when he goes to the principal film, he goes with Robert Ackley, regardless of the way that Holden recently revealed to us that he disdains him. Holden says that he sees Ackley as totally irritating. Be that as it may, he was the person who welcomed Ackley along. â€Å"I inquired as to whether he disapproved if Ackley joined us†¦ Mal said he didn’t mind however that he wasn’t too obsessed with the idea.†(36) This statement helps show another logical inconsistency of Holden’s through Salinger’s utilization of first individual perspective. Holden additionally searched out Ackley as a type of solace after his battle with Stradlater. Holden had nobody else to go to after the battle aside from Ackley. â€Å"I had a vibe Ackley’d likely heard all the racket and was alert, so I experienced the shower blinds and into his room† (46) . Salinger again utilizes first individual perspective to show much a greater amount of this withdrawal. Another logical inconsistency that can be found has to do with Sally Hayes. Despite the fact that Holden calls Sally a fake, he despite everything chooses to go through a night with her. In his mind, he keeps on saying the amount he abhors Sally and the amount she irritates him, yet he communicates that he adores her. Holden broadens his logical inconsistency by necking with Sally in the rear of the taxi, and still keeps on considering the way that he detests her. â€Å"I revealed to her I adored her what not. It was a lie, of course.†(125) Holden’s real musings about Sally stick out from different explanations using first individual perspective. Holden even goes similar to attempting to flee with Sally. He communicates a need of fleeing and living all alone, directly in the wake of calling her a genuine annoyance. â€Å"I was getting energized as damnation the more I pondered it, and I kind of came to over and took old Sally’s goddam hand. What a goddam moron I was.† (132) This logical inconsistency was appeared using first individual perspective. First individual perspective is utilized by J.D. Salinger to show Holden’s inconsistencies in the Catcher in the Rye. Holden negates himself all the time; it persuades that he is insane. Because of the way that he has an issue with conveying to other people, letting his sentiments out turned into a test. His greatest fight included his internal considerations, and the words he really communicated for all to hear. We can discover a large portion of his logical inconsistencies through this skirmish of words.

Righting the Gender Divide for Authors on Wikipedia

Righting the Gender Divide for Authors on Wikipedia Have you heard about the 2015 Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon? Its aim is to increase the number of female participants sharing knowledge on Wikipedia, and in turn, teach readers and researchers more about important women in the arts and sciences that have been ignored or left out. We here at Book Riot came up with a list of women writers who need entries (or more extensive entries) on Wikipedia (though there are SO MANY MORE). Do you know about these particular writers, and can you give them the web-presence they deserve? (For most of my information, I consulted the Literary Reference Center Database, which should be available through most public and university libraries). Wikipedia page to create Eloise Bibb (1878-1928?): According to the Digital Schomburg African American Women Writers of the 19th c. page, Bibb was born in New Orleans to a prosperous African-American family. Her first book, Poems, was published in 1895, and includes To the Sweet Bard of the Womens Club, a paean to fellow writer Alice Dunbar-Nelson. A graduate of Oberlin Colleges Preparatory Academy, and Howard Universitys Teachers College, Bibb ultimately took a leadership role in Howards Colored Social Settlement House. Upon her marriage in 1911, Bibb moved to Los Angeles, and then New York City, where she died around 1928. Not only does Bibb not have a Wikipedia page, she doesnt even have an entry in the comprehensive Literature Resource Center database. However, with a little bit of research, Im sure anyone interested in 19th century African American literature could find more information about her, and discuss more of her writing. Wikipedia pages to update Bebe Moore Campbell (1950-2006): a successful African-American novelist, essayist, and writer of childrens books, non-fiction, and radio plays, Campbell dealt with topics like mental illness and family issues. Her page offers a brief overview of Campbells personal and writing lives, and then lists selected works and one reference. And thats it. How about some in-depth exploration of Campbells style and interests, and some analysis of her bestsellers (Brothers and Sisters, Singing in the Comeback Choir, and What You Owe Me)? Margaret Coel (b.1937): A chronicler of the American West, Coel (born in Colorado) is well-known for her Wind River mystery series set among the Arapaho in Wyoming. Her award-winning biography of the Arapaho Chief Left Hand and memoir-history of railroading in Colorado were named as two of the best 100 books on Colorado history by the Colorado Historical Society. Coel graduated with a degree in journalism from Marquette University and wrote for the Boulder Daily Camera. Her page includes a paltry mini-bio and a list of her works (and one reference). Come on, now. We can do better than that. Marele Day (b.1947): Day is an Australian writer of mystery novels, most known for her four novels that feature the countrys first female private investigator- Claudia Valentine. Day has also written a screenplay and edited a how-to book about writing crime fiction. Her page screams out for further discussion of her Valentine books, especially her brilliance in expressing a sense of place. Janet Campbell Hale (b.1946)- A Native-American writer living on the Coeur dAlene Reservation in De Smet, Idaho, Hale is known for her award-winning poetry and her novels, which explore Native-American issues and identity. Her page includes just a brief biographical note and a few references, as well as some links. A more extensive discussion of her poetry and novels would greatly enhance it. Cynthia Kadohata (b.1956): Kadohata is a Japanese-American childrens writer and winner of the Newberry Medal in 2005, as well as the National Book Award in 2013. She has written both literary fiction and young-adult fiction, some of which explores the role of Japanese-Americans in the U.S. after WWII. Her page would benefit from even brief discussions of each of her novels and her experimentation with different genres. E.D.E.N. Southworth (1819-1899): I have a particular affection for Emma Dorothy Eliza Nevitte Southworth, having read her recently-republished The Hidden Hand (1888) and her first novel,  Retribution (1849), which I discuss here.   Southworth was wildly popular in the U.S. during the 19th century, with much of her writing appearing first in serial form. The biographical information on her page doesnt adequately reflect the turmoil of her marriage and ultimate separation from her husband, a trope that she explores in her fiction. ____________________ Follow us on Twitter for more bookish goodness! Industrial Revolution Was A Significant - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 4 Words: 1091 Downloads: 8 Date added: 2019/04/16 Category History Essay Level High school Tags: Industrial Revolution Essay Did you like this example? The Industrial Revolution was a significant time of change. This is where many changes to the manufacturing processes took place that caused a lot of controversy. During the Industrial Revolution liberals were becoming more prevalent as more people were being treated worse as factory workers. A liberal during the Industrial Revolutions time were usually middle class. They were not rich, but they also were not considered as poor. They did not support the conditions that factory workers had to work in. They pushed for laws to be created so that factory workers can be treated equally. They also opposed other laws such as the Corn Laws. There were many influential people that were against the Industrialization, due to the unjust treatment of the factory workers. One of these significant figures was William Cobbett, a first-rate literary brawler and radical publicist (DR I, Page 44). Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Industrial Revolution Was A Significant" essay for you Create order According to Documentary Reader I, Cobbet seen the Industrialization in England as very suspicious and this is what led him to resist against the Corn Laws and also join the fight with Englands middle classes to push for laws that will put an end to the rotten borough system that had long advantaged the rural, conservative south in English politics (DR I, Page 44). This example shows how the Industrialization period brought many controversies and how the middle class and others came together to uproot these processes. Being a factory worker during this period was not very pleasant. Many of the workers were young and were not treated in the best fashion. The factory workers would have to work extremely long hours with little to support their families. The factories were unhealthy and not safe as many injuries occurred. Cobbett expressed in his writings how he was ashamed of the conditions many of the workers had to endure. From his writings, Cobbett states, that he expressed deep shame of how the laboring people were being treated. Specifically in his writing, Cobbett expressed how Dogs and hogs and horses are treated with more civility (DR I, Page 48). This section of Cobbetts writings proved of the treatment that the factory workers had to go through. The parallels that Cobbett used to describe the treatment as saying that animals were treated better is a statement that best proves that the masters that owner these factories were callous, selfish, and only seen profit rather than respect. As mentioned before, there was a lot of debate over the Industrialization. The British Tory leader Michael Sadler launched an investigation of the conditions of the textile factories (DR I, Page 32). In his investigation, he spoke with some of the factory workers to get their insight and perspective of how it is in the life of a factory worker. Many of the factory workers started working at very young ages. Matthew Crabtree, an interviewer of Michael Sadler, expressed that he has been working in a factory since the age of 8 (DR I, Page 33). This revealed the practice of child labor within factories. He also revealed some touching insight of the factory stating there was not enough time in the mill for breakfast and that if you were late, you would be severely beaten. These statements not only shed light on the working conditions but also the abuse they had to accept for their wrongdoings. Shortly after these testimonies were published, the Parliamentary Act of 1833 was passed which limited the hours that women and children could work in the factory industry. Also stated in the DR I (Page 32), Other laws were enacted following the passing of this law. These laws eventually eliminated the employment of children in the mining and factories. Although Michael Sadlers Committees findings about child labor, there were some people that did not agree and went against the findings Michael Sadler published. A Scottish doctor and chemist, Andrew Ure, defended the factory system and disagreed that children were working within the factories. In his writings, Ure stated that masters of these factories would not abuse children. He also specified that when he would visit these factories, that the children seemed to be always cheerful and alert, taking pleasure in the light play of their muscles enjoying the mobility natural to their age (DR I, Page 39). This position on the factory conditions goes against the shocks that Michael Sadlers committee exposed to the world. According to Andrew Ure, child labor was not an issue or simply did not exist. With all of this information from both sides, Michael Sadlers Committee and Andrew Ure, both shed light on the physical and mental breakdown of the factory workers. With these accusations and revelations being exposed, this is why liberals pushed for these laws to be enacted so that child workers in the factories can live a better life and work in better conditions. With the publications of Michael Sadlers Committee writings, this created the Parliamentary Act of 1833. This act restricted the working day in textile mills to 12 hours for persons aged 13 through 17, and 8 hours for those aged 9 through 12 (The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica Michael Thomas Sadler). This did in fact make the conditions of the factories better for children. In conclusion, liberals had a significant impact on the changes that occurred during the Industrialization period. After the findings were exposed to the general public about child labor and the disastrous working conditions, many influential people worked to change these rules for the better. Some indicated that the reason Michael Sadlers Committee released the investigation information regarding factory conditions were to retaliate against Britains manufacturing that was emerging and to go against Britains push for free trade values (DR I, Page 32). Even though this might have been his agenda and plan, it did cause an uproar and created a new set of foundations that made it a little better for children working within the factories. Moreover, the Industrial Revolution did make a shift from a rural environment to an urban environment. This was a definite change for England. It was a good change for the rich but a cruel change for most. The changes that emerged included more factories that could support the many industries that need to produce their items. This caused many poor people to accept these dreadful jobs to support their own. They had to suffer and deal with the mistreatment of working under the unfair conditions. It was bad enough for adults to endure this treatment, but it was very different to hear that children also had to be workers. Even though this Industrialization created more, it seemly destroyed even more than it intended.

Madonna and the Child with Saint Peter and Saint John Free Essays

The National Gallery of Art in Washington D. C. holds a wide selection of works of art from ancient times. We will write a custom essay sample on Madonna and the Child with Saint Peter and Saint John or any similar topic only for you Order Now Among these are Madonna and the Child (expressed in tempera on panel) and Madonna and the Child with Saint Peter and Saint John the Evangelist (also expressed in tempera on panel). The themes of both works are similar in that both contain an interpretation of the Virgin Mary (Madonna) and her interaction with the Christ Child. However, the differing contexts in which these are placed add further levels of meaning to each individual piece as depicted by each artist. Despite this, similarities also exist between the two paintings, and these similarities range from the use of color and lighting, to the sizes and perspectives used by the artists. Therefore, superimposed upon the differences in style, context and (to an extent) subject matter; similarities of color, lighting and perspective are to be found in these two works of art. The work Madonna and the Child was most likely painted some time between 1320 and 1330 AD. This was done in the late Byzantine Period in Italy by the artist Giotto, whose style is considered to be anticipatory of naturalism. The panel that holds this particular work represents Giotto in the later stages of his career and demonstrates the sobriety and restraint of an artist that had already spent his enthusiastic flare. Nardo (who died in his twenties), on the other hand, displays his 1360 painting in much brighter and vibrant colors that are typical of his youth and enthusiasm. While in Giotto’s work one detects the deliberate strokes of a talented artist that seeks to display the natural portrait of a woman and her baby caught in motion, in Nardo one also sees the talent, but with a less naturalistic tint. Nardo represents a return to the more traditional portrait-like paintings where subjects appeared poised specifically to be captured in the medium. Therefore, whereas in Giotto’s painting, the hands of the mother and child are caught in the act of brushing by her chest, Nardo’s painting depicts mother and child in absence of motion. Furthermore, Nardo’s painting includes the apostles on the side in adoration of these persons as saints, while Giotto represents them more on the side of human persons spontaneously experiencing life in solitude. The colors and lighting techniques used by these two artists offer themselves up for scrutiny. Contrast and conceptualization are used to a large extent in both the Giotto and the Nardo paintings. Giotto uses a method of alternating between gold and black to emphasize the importance of the Madonna. A conceptual interpretation of the colors might also demonstrate that the Madonna is herself covered by a black shroud of humanity, though her gold-tinted skin demonstrates the worth of the person within the shroud. The colors used for the Christ child corroborate this and elevate Him in relation to his mother, as he is given no dark-colored garment to attenuate the golden nature represented in the color of his body. In a similar fashion, the Nardo depiction of the Madonna, Peter and John features a stark black background that has the effect of focusing the eyes of the viewer upon the portraits within. Yet, the pictures of Peter and John on either side of the Virgin take on less significance because of a reduction in their sizes and of the contrast between their color and that of the wall in front of which they stand. This has conceptual value in that is denotes that the Madonna and the Christ Child take more precedence than the apostles. The mother and child’s position at the center also highlights this idea. One gets several feelings when one views these two paintings in the gallery. The immensity of the subject and the beauty of the golden and reddish colors give the idea that one is in the presence of highly exalted persons. Yet, one also gets the idea that the persons being viewed (especially in the Giotto painting) are also natural and in the middle of living their lives. With Giotto, the viewer has the sense that he/she witnesses â€Å"a quite drama† in which occurs â€Å"the human interaction between a mother and a child† (National Gallery). In contrast with this, the Nardo portrait gives a more contrived picture which resembles the posing of the two for a portrait. According to interpretation by the Gallery’s art historians, â€Å"Nardo’s Virgin, despite her soft expression, appears removed from human concerns.† The Virgin is, in this picture, aware of being under the scrutiny of others: the Saints Peter and John that flank her on each side, and the artist himself for whom she poses.
